Getting to Brackett House

Brackett House is located on the corner of 2nd Street SW and 5th Avenue SW in Mount Vernon, Iowa.  This is just across the street from the east edge of the Cornell College campus and the lawn where commencement and other college ceremonies are held. This area is affectionately called the Hilltop by the college since it is part of the ridge that runs through Mount Vernon.

From the Cedar Rapids airport (CID), head north on I-380 to the exit for Highway 30. Follow Highway 30 east to the intersection with Highway 1 (a roundabout) and take Highway 1 north toward downtown Mount Vernon. A left turn onto 2nd Street SW will bring you directly to the turn into the house’s parking lot.

From points further west, follow I-80 east to the intersection with I-380 north, and then proceed as noted above.

From the Quad Cities, Chicago, and points further east, use I-80 west to Iowa City where you pick up Highway 1 north into Mount Vernon. Some people prefer the more scenic Highway 30 route through Lisbon that leads to the Highway 1 roundabout.

From north or south, you’ll enter Mount Vernon Road on Highway 1 and turn west onto 2nd Street SW to reach the parking lot entrance.

Guest Parking

Guests have first priority in the Brackett House parking lot with one car per room—parking is complimentary. If there is not parking available when you arrive, please park on 2nd Street SW and alert the innkeepers to the parking situation. If you have multiple vehicles, you may need to make use of the free street parking if requested. If you have visitors, they are welcome to use the parking lot when there is room.
